Blinkhorn blurs the line between dance and ambient styles of electronic music with his third album, Joy Mechanics. Effected drum machine sounds join meticulously designed synthesizer patches in Joy Mechanics, an album in which Blinkhorn finds his rhythm. Over about 31 minutes, Blinkhorn uses the arc of Joy Mechanics to tell a uniquely modern story that listeners may find relatable and perhaps inspiring. In a world full of distractions, Joy Mechanics is Blinkhorn's appeal for you to focus on what matters most to you and how doing that can help you live a joyful life.
Joy Mechanics is a sonic picture of a digital world in which our minds are prisoners inside the machine. We can use moments in which we are deliberately engaged in activities that bring us happiness and purpose as a path to escape from the machine. These intentional moments are our joy mechanics.
"Inside the Machine" introduces Joy Mechanics, easing the listener in with a gentle synthesizer melody before adding layers of automated percussion and a deep bassline that drives the music. The title track further explores textured percussive polyrhythms and features a widely-ranged bassline that grounds the listener while encouraging their imagination to soar. A modulated, angelic-sounding synthesizer patch evolves over the course "Joy Mechanics," becoming increasingly complex and eventually seems to fall apart before reclaiming its composure to end the track sweetly. Demonstrating an unmistakable intensity, "Digital World" uses quick, complex drum machine polyrhythms and an evolving synthesizer passage to describe the coarse and unforgiving universe in which Joy Mechanics takes place. The gentle harmonies of the chord progression become an intense central element of "Digital World" during its climax, seemingly commanding the infrequent synthesizer melody with a sensitive character to stand down. "Escape from the Machine" starts in a minor key and continues the album's theme of abrasively resonant drum sounds. As "Escape from the Machine" progresses, the background synthesized harmonies open up, and with help from the bassline and the lead melody, the chord progression shifts to the relative major key signature, suggesting hope for a potential route to escape from the machine. At this point, the cacophonous percussion sounds that had dominated the album gradually fade, giving the bright synthesizer sounds room for expression. "Escape from the Machine" closes Joy Mechanics with a soloed field recording taken at a lush natural space that had been in the track all along.
